A few questions families ask most often. If yours is not answered here, please get in touch — I am always happy to talk it through.
When is a good age to start piano?
Around age five is a good time to begin. Starting much earlier tends to mean slower progress, simply because the physical and reading skills involved are still developing. Every child is different, though, and a free trial lesson is the best way to tell whether your child is ready.
Do you offer a trial lesson?
Yes — the first lesson is free, with no obligation.
Does my child need a real piano, or is a keyboard enough?
A real piano is better in the long run, because of the weight and response of the keys. For a young beginner who is still finding out whether they enjoy the instrument, a keyboard is perfectly fine to start with. I would rather a family begin on a keyboard than wait.
How often do I need to tune my piano?
About once a year for a piano in normal home use.
How often are recitals?
At least twice a year. Students are warmly encouraged to take part, and past recitals are on the recitals page.
Do you prepare students for examinations?
Yes. Through my MTAC membership students can take part in Certificate of Merit evaluations, and I also prepare students for ABRSM examinations. Both are optional.
How much should my child practise?
At least four times a week. Short, regular practice is far more effective than one long session, and it is the clearest single difference between students who enjoy their playing and students who find it a chore.
